Non-consensual sharing of sexual images

“Non-consensual sharing of sexual images” is when a sexually graphic image or video of a person is shared without their agreement. This can include images that were generated consensually (but not for sharing) or taken without the person’s consent, often from:

  • Hidden recordings
  • Images stolen from electronic devices (phones, computers, tablets, etc.)

In some cases it includes images where the sexual activity itself was unconsensual such as the recording of sexual assaults.

Non-consensual sharing of sexual images is sometimes referred to as ‘revenge porn’ if the person’s motivation is to personally attack or threaten the person shown in the image.  The term typically includes photographs and video clips which have been consensually generated-either jointly or by self (“sexting”), as well as content covertly recorded by a partner or unknown third party.
